Ireland 11th as USA run away with Espirito Santo Trophy

The United States of America produced a final day flourish to win the World Amateur Championship by 10 shots and take home the Espirito Santo Trophy for the first time since 1998.

Ireland entered the closing round with an outside chance of taking a medal but they failed to gain ground and an even par return for the day left them finishing in a tie for 11th place. Japan, second on 19 under, and Republic of Korea, one shot further back in third, filled the medal positions.

Ireland lose ground as USA take control

Ireland are hoping for more birdies tomorrow after an unrewarding second round on the O'Meara Course at the World Amateur Team Championship.

Olivia Mehaffey spearheaded the home challenge with a round of 70 (-2) on the demanding Montgomerie Course and combined with Annabel Wilson's total of 71 (-1), Ireland hold a healthy position behind leaders Japan, who are two clear at the top on eight under.

Ireland set their sights on Espirito Santo Trophy

Olivia Mehaffey sums it neatly.

“Being in Ireland, it would be amazing to win a medal,” says the 20-year-old international from Scarva, Co Down.

Her subject of conversation is the World Amateur Team Championships, which begin at Carton House with the Espirito Santo Trophy on Wednesday. Two years ago Mehaffey was a member of the Ireland team that took bronze for the first time and now that the worlds have come to Ireland for the first time, the incentive could hardly be greater.
